VanderbiltCupRaces.com Exclusive: A Vanderbilt Cup Race Scrapbook Discovered in Garden City
The Garden City Archives have discovered a small scrapbook of photos from the 1905 and 1906 Vanderbilt Cup Races. The scrapbook was a gift from Dorothy Peters Hubbell, whose family had direct links to the Long Island Motor Parkway and the founding of Garden City.
Dorothy Peters Hubbell, a long-time resident of Garden City, was the daughter of Ralph Peters, a former president of the LIRR (1905-1923) and a director of the Long Island Motor Parkway. She was married to John Hubbell, whose father George L. Hubbell Sr. was the first mayor of Garden City in 1919 and founder and first president of the Long Island Trust Company, originally known as the Garden City Bank.

1905 Vanderbilt Cup Race
Looking east down Jericho Turnpike in Mineola. It appears all the 1905 photos were taken on the Jericho Turnpike section of the course
The Mineola press box and grandstands can be seen in the backgroound.
#7 Locomobile (USA) driven by Joe Tracy, 90 HP. Finished 3rd. First American car to ever place in an international race. Beat Lancia by 2 minutes and 5 seconds. Averaged 56.9 mph.
#14 Panhard (France) driven by George Heath. 120 HP. Driver was 1904 Vanderbilt Cup Race winner. Finished 2nd. Lost by 3 minutes and 32 seconds. Averaged 60.7 mph.

#18 Darracq (France) driven by Victor Hemery. 80 HP. Finished 1st. Hemery received $12,000 from Darracq and tire manufacturers for winning. Averaged 61.5 mph.
Hemery passing #20 Fiat (Italy) driven by Paul Sartori. 90 HP. Sartori finished 7th.Broke crankshaft during Lap 9 .

1906 Vanderbilt Cup Race
#2 Panhard (France) by 1904 winner George Heath, 120 HP. Finished 9th. Running in Lap 9 when race was called. Averaged 49.7 mph.
#3 Mercedes (Germany) driven by Camille Jenatzy, 120 HP. Finished 5th. Completed all 10 laps. Averaged 58.5 mph.
A closer look shows the #19 Itala in the background. The Itala (Italy) driven by Maurice Fabry,120 HP. Finished 12th. Running in Lap 8 when race was called. Averaged 47.8 mph.
#4 Fiat (Italy) driven by Vincenzo Lancia, 120 HP. Finished 2nd. Completed all 10 laps. Averaged 60.7 mph.
#10 Darracq (France) driven by Louis Wagner, 100 HP. Finished 1st. Finished 3 minutes and 16 seconds ahead of Lancia. Averaged 62.7 mph.
#12 Itala (Italy) driven by Alessandro Cagno, 120 HP. Finished 7th. Running in Lap 10 when race was called. Averaged 52.3 mph.
#17 front-wheel drive Christie (USA) driven by Walter Christie, 50 HP. Finished 13th. Running in Lap 8 when race was called. Averaged 44.7 mph.
#18 Lorraine-Dietrich (France) driven by Arthur Duray, 120 HP. Finished 3rd, only 16 seconds behind Lancia. Averaged 60.7 mph.

I am tempted to say “Nay”, but it is a horse.
Great collection of photos! Interesting to see very small children so close to the roadway in one of the 1905 race pictures. A bit risky if you ask me. I don’t think I’ve seen such small children in any race pictures. I don’t think that’s a horse in that picture either!
Knowing how loud the Black Beast is, it’s amazing that the horse was [at least appears] calm as these cars passed under full throttle! Combustion engines were a new, unknown sound at that time making even more amazing they didn’t bolt into a field!
Please provide some help. Is the picture in Mineola at the press box a mirror image of reality. You say the picture is looking east. Yet, the based on the way the crowd is facing, it appears the photo is looking for the cars coming from the west.
I am trying to figure out exactly where the photographer may have been standing.

Joe, the Mineola press box is on the left and the grandstands on the right. A racer has just passed the drow who are looking easterly down Jericho Turnpike.
Another great find. “Just passed the drow”? Really? However, I am writing about the horse, perforce; of course, he’s not at all calm but about to bolt. Nuts; that’s screwy. Mayhap it’s a mare and they’re about to wash ‘er. But the steed’s not “of course”; it’s off course, of course. Go on; hate me! Sam, III

The Mineola grandstand was located about one block west of Mineola Boulevard on Jericho Turnpike.
