Mystery Friday Foto #43 Solved: Three automobiles in the Hicksville Public Library Archives
Did you help the Hicksville Public Library identify these three automobiles?
Jeanne Booth, Librarian/Archivist, Hicksville Public Library: "A small collection of family photographs was donated to the Hicksville archives recently and include pictures of early automobiles. May I impose upon you again to identify them?"
Consensus answers to the Mystery Foto questions:
Identify the year, manufacturer, and model for the three automobiles:
- Automobile A: 1906 National Model D
- Automobile B: 1904 Pope-Toledo Type IV
- Automobile C: 1905 Maxwell L Tourabout

Congrats to Ed Labounty (my favorite Henry Ford actor), Ariejan Bos, Dick Gorman and Al Velocci for identifying at least ofe of the automobiles.
Kudos to our resident Dutch expert Ariejan Bos for identifying all three automobiles and Al Velocci for possibly identifying the women in Automobile A.
Enjoy,
Howard Kroplick
Automobile A.
According to my favorite co-author Al Velocci, the two women may be Johanna Taliaferro and Mrs. Gilbert Hicks (see below Comments).
"Watch for the Round Radiator"
Comments
Howard,
Automobile A looks like a Franklin to me.
Rog
National ,Corban and Maxwell
Rather straightforward I would say, though it is possible that the year (and thus the model) are slightly different:
A. National 1906 model D
B. Pope-Toledo 1904, the 24hp model
C. Maxwell 1905 model L
Mystery Foto # 43…I can only identify Automobile A with the round radiator.
Let’s call it a 1904 National, Model C.
Couldn’t find the other two.
Howard, Automobile A. is a1906 National, model C. ( The NY license on the truck was issued in 1906.) Automobile B. is a 1908-09 National. Can’t help you with regard to Automobile C. My speculation with regard to the identity of the two women. I want one to be Mrs. Johanna Taliaferro, a Hicksville resident. She had an interest in automobiles as she was an investor in the Long Island Motor Parkway. Could the other woman be Mrs. Gilbert Hicks ? At the time her husband owned an automobile dealership and repair shop in Hicksville. The building he occupied was owned by Mrs. Taliaferro.
Addendum from Dick G..See pics of 1904 National.
In the A. photo, I wonder if that’s a toll lodge that their parked at?
From Jeanne Booth:
I want to thank you and everyone involved with the identification of the vehicles. Al Velocci called and we had a nice conversation regarding the ladies in the National. The information provided is priceless for describing photographs for the archives. Again, thank you!

Jeanne Booth
