Greg O’s Garage: The 1904 Vanderbilt Cup Race Course in Motoring and Boating

In the September 28, 1904 issue of Motoring and Boating magazine, the centerfold featured a fantastic panorama of many of the important locations of the 1904 Vanderbilt Cup Race.

Greg O.

The 1904 cover also featured of photo of Willie K steering his Mercedes VI to a recent race victory on the water.

The centerfold showing great views of various locations around the then bucolic course around Long Island.

Numbered photos correspond to their locations on the hand-drawn, overlaid map. All the photos taken by the famous F.E. Spooner of Spooner and Wells.

Image 14 shows the race promotional/warning sign in the hamlet of Jericho.

The only known surviving poster from 1904 is currently in the Vanderbilt Museum archives.

Photo 7 is the race HQ for Packard in the 1904 races- Krug's Hotel in Mineola.

A few of the photos are of the same location despite saying they are different. For instance, photos 9 & 10 are both the same of the Jericho grandstands under construction, but from slightly differing angles.

And the Hicksville Control, seen here as photo 16, is the same, (just wider) as photo 17.

A side note from Art's Kleiner's Korner, the person at the R.R. crossing is "Henry B. Joy, shown in the Packard which took the panoramic photos. Joy was an early investor in Packard and became its President in 1909.   He became a very important significant player in Packard's growth and the auto industry in general."

Photo 17 close up.

Being Motoring and Boating, Willie K. is featured not only on the land with his new course, but on the water in his 'Auto-Boat' Mercedes VI in the photo just inside the cover along with a very complimentary article about his land and sea racing exploits.

Interesting photos! The panoramic was a hit with readers as the magazine needed to print extra copies and reprinted the picture in the following week’s edition.

Wanted to show off my new watercolor painting based on the blog photo of the 1909 Chalmers-Detroit but now in color. Racecars are one of my favorite subjects for watercolor.
