Kleiner’s Korner: A Return to the Long Island Motor Parkway (Part 2)

The next exploration in my return to Long Island is a much photographed section of the Motor Parkway in Suffolk County - off of Maxess Road in Melville.

This farmway bridge over the Motor Parkway allowed pedestrians and farm equipment to go from one side of the property to the other.  Photographs first start on the east side of Maxess Road and then move to the west side.

The Historical Marker

Put up by the Town of Huntington and Oxford Management Company in 2004.

The bridge connected two parcels of land owned by John Baker.  The land that the Parkway ultimately bought were from Ezekial Smith which has been detailed in prior posts and A. L. Ruland and E. W. Smith.

Notices marking the transfer of land to the LI Motor Parkway which were adjacent to the holdings of Clara Jahn in 1910 (South Side Signal Jun. 18, 1910).

East of Maxess Road

Looking west.  Graffiti artists are still at work.

Looking east.

North abutment.

South abutment

The 1910 construction date can still be read on each abutment.

View of the bridge from across Maxess Road.

West of Maxess Road

Motor Parkway relics can be found west of Maxess Road.  However, I doubt the tire is a parkway relic - lol!

The berm on the left side of the road might indicate the path of the parkway.

Not sure if this is from the Motor Parkway but thought I'd photograph it.

My next time up on Long Island is sometime this summer when I hope to do additional trips back to the Motor Parkway.

Hi Art! Let me know when you’ll be on Long Island. Steve Lucas and I will join you to explore more sites.

It has been years since I explored over there.  But heading east, there used to be some decent remnants of the pavement and (as a kid) what I called the concrete sidewalks.
