Classic Photos of “Old 16” Locomobile
The most photographed car in all the Vanderbilt Cup Races was the 1908 winner "Old 16" Locomobile. Among my collection of over 250 "Old 16" images, these are ten of my favorites taken during the race:
At the starting line at 6:45 AM. Referee William K. Vanderbilt, Jr., can be seen to the left wearing a cap.
On the Massapequa-Hicksville Road Motor Parkway Bridge. The Masapequa Lodge can be seen behind "Old 16".
Making a turn on Plainview Road in Bethpage.
At a pit stop in front of the grandstand, driver George Robertson and mechanician Glenn Ethridge were greeted by Willie K. and Vanderbilt Cup Race commissioner Jefferson DeMont Thompson. Note the person in the far right corner of the Press Box...Evidence these two photos were taken seconds apart.
Robertson and Ethridge working on "Old 16". The 1908 rules allowed only the driver and mechanician could work on the car. The pit crew could only pass along the supplies.
Storming through the Westbury Turn at the corner of Jericho Turnpike and Elliston Road. The crowd was dangerously close to the action.

Just after the Westbury Turn,"Old 16" soars over the Long Island Rail Road Bridge on Elliston Road. All four wheels appeared to leave the road at the crest of the bridge.
